I hope you enjoy this summer issue, our last issue of the millenium!
AS&E has had a wonderful 1999 and we are so looking forward to an exciting 2000. This has been a year of spreading our wings on the international scene. Country Bumpkin Publications is becoming quite a phenomenon, particularly in America where our name is synonomous with both quality and innovation.
Susan O’Connor, Di Menzel (our mail order manager) and I have just returned from 1999 Annual Convention of the Smocking Arts Guild of America (SAGA). We took classes from world-renowned teachers, made lots of new friends and extracted many promises of visits to Australia. And yes, I did bring bring home quite a few UFO’s (unfinished objects) from my classes. I will really try to finish them… However, I am pleased to say that my hand sewing skills and embroidery skills have improved, thanks to the ever-patient Lillie McAnge and Jeannie Beaumeister and the wonderful Wendy Schoen. We were entranced by Cindy Foose, a well-known teacher on the American circuit whose energetic style perfectly complements her outstanding knowledge. I even dyed my own silk ribbon and then embroidered with it in a class I took with Kathy Awender – I was pretty impressed with what I did until I compared it with my classmate Jan Kerton’s efforts… enough said!
In 2000, we are providing the perfect opportunity for visitors from overseas to come to beautiful South Australia.
Our “Beating Around the Bush 2000” convention will be held from 25 to 29 September and I can promise you a wonderful time. Let me tempt you with Australia’s top teachers in smocking and embroidery, some surprise international names, an amazing market day, design competition with fabulous prizes and the sheer joy of spending five days with fellow devotees of smocking and embroidery.
Upcoming issues of AS&E and Inspirations will have more details about this fabulous event.
People are always surprised when I tell them about the tiny team that produces AS&E. I would like to thank that little group – Susan, Kathy, Marian, Helen, Lizzie and Coral for their superb efforts during the year.
We wish all our readers a very peaceful Christmas and hope all your dreams come true in 2000 and that you enjoy your free bookmark.
