From the editor, Marian Carpenter

You may recall last year in issue 39, we were proud to present to our readers the South African Smocking Competition winner for 1996. This year we are again privileged to bring you the winner for 1997, Patricia Timmins.

Patricia’s exquisite entry, Celebrations, is featured in this edition of AS&E on page 20 and I’m sure there will be many mothers and grandmothers just ‘itching’ to start this project for their own little princess.

We also received photographs of the winning entries from various categories and were delightfully impressed by the diverse range of garments, the unique ideas used and the high standard or smocking.

I am sure you would all like to know a little about Patricia. She was born in Mexico City, is married and has a daughter, Monica. In In 1984 the family emigrated to South Africa where Patricia is now teaching classes. 1987 brought about the birth of her own smocking company, Its Smocking, and she became Chairlady of the South African Smocking Guild within one year of joining. She is also Chairlady of the Johannesburg Smocking Arts Guild. Several of Patricia’s Articles have been published and she contributes to the English Smocker’s Guild newsletter. Patricia recently launched her first smocking book, Let’s Smock It (see page 56).

This edition of AS&E is a wonderful complication of smocking treasures

In fact you could say this is rather a cosmopolitan issue, with the sophisticated coat featuring a faux fur collar and cuffs (Out of Africa, page 14)the exotic Indian inspired dress (Shisha, page 4) and Patricia’s dress (Celebrations, page 20). Teenagers have also been catered for with a chic sundress (The Endless Summer, page 8)

In the next issue we will bring you details of an exciting smocking competition covering many different categories. We invite you to start thinking about your entries.

In the brief time that I have had the previlege to be editor of Australian & Smocking Embroidery, I have made many friends who share my interest in smocking. I hope that through this common interest you too are making new friends with whom you can share your talents and experiences.
